Introduction & Purpose

Your handgun magazines are an interesting phenomenon in a tactical environment. Most likely – and hopefully, you will never need an additional handgun magazine during a deployment. But when you need it you will need it fast.

So the retention of your spare handgun magazine should be a well made decision. A decision based on a balance between rock solid retention -remember, the magazine will stay unused most of the time; and fast access.

Kydex holders have become somewhat of a staple when it comes to the way of carrying your primary handgun reload, but sadly I never owned a model that either had a retention to my likings, or didn’t feature a mounting system that did dig into my hips. This was the case until Black Trident did make a solution for my problems.

Construction & Features

Black Trident decided to go for a classic “C-shape”, with the open side orientated forward. This design decision comes with pros and cons, the con is the fact that dirt and debris may come in contact with the opening, which can cause trouble in a military application. So, you should at least properly inspect the magazine before and after every mission or range session. The huge pro regarding the forward oriented “C-shape” is the great adjustment range of retention as well as the weight savings and universal fitting options.

Speaking of the fitting, Black Tridents magazine pouch did eat every double stacked 9mm Glock magazine that I tried, ranging from stock Glock magazines to MAGPUL ones. A important point to speak of is that the model I used isn’t ambidextrous and is only applicable for right handed shooters. This comes with the pro that the Black Trident handgun magpouch fits like a glove but also impedes tactical reloads. Personally, I don’t see tactical reloads on pistols as a big thing for me, so Im perfectly fine and prefer the glove like fit.

If you don’t like the stock fit of the Black Trident kydex 9mm mag pouch you can adjust it to your likings by two rubber encased phillips screws on the front of the pouch.

Speaking about screws, Iam really glad that phillips screws become more and more of an industry standard in the holster world as they are easy to adjust or tighten on the go with almost every multitool you can find on the market.

Phillips screws are also used to attach the mounting hardware of Black Tridents magazine pouch.

The featured a hardware is a TEK-LOK system, made by Blade Tech.

There are several opinions out there on the TEK-LOK, but here is mine. The TEK-LOK may appear a big overconstructed, but the complex construction leads to many advantages like the ability to remove the magazine from a belt without removing the buckle or pouches attached behind or in front of the mag holder

It also offers a mechanical locking mechanism which could be made even safer by attaching some tape. You can also adjust the TEK-LOK to every possible size of a belt. But there is one thing that needs to be pointed out: Thinner belts like my Terra-B Gun Belt don’t create enough friction to keep the magazine in place. So you have to improvise

So you have to improvise with a thin piece of fabric or a wrap of Camoform on the area of the belt where you want to place the pouch as this ensures the needed friction. On the front of Black Tridents magazine pouch youll also find drilled holes which serve the purpose of relocating the mounting hardware, which makes the pouch semi-ambidextrous as you are able to switch sides if you are in possession of tools.

So much for the science, but does the Black Trident magpouch work and does it hold up quality wise? Using the pouch for several months up to this day, the extraction of the mag was pretty easy when going for a tight pull. I also found it very easy to even blindly reindex a magazine, further inspection of the pouch showed me that it has a light flare to its build, meaning that its mouth is bigger than the top of the magazine which explains the surprising ease of reindexing.

The used kydex is thick and sturdy and features a slight texture to it which makes it look very high quality. All screws are subdued and don’t lose their coating even after some adjustment with different tools. Last but not least you’ll find Black Tridents logo laser engraved at the outward facing side of the pouch, a nice touch that doesn’t add function but some flair.

Every product made by Black Trident is handcrafted in Austria. Speaking of handmade, you will recognize some edges and corners that could be a bit smoother, but don’t affect the quality of the overall product.

If you are in the market for a sturdy and reliable pistol magazine holder with a glove like fit you cant go wrong with the solutions offered by Black Trident. If you wish to add a flexible mag orientation the friendly Austrians at BT can also help you with a custom design.
